    For those of you getting into the use of essential oils, massage oils are a great way to get started. A good massage not only benefits your stress levels, but the use of a good carrier oil conditions your skin, and the essential oils can make each massage a different experience depending on what you are looking for.


    Massage Oil Recipes

    Select your favorite carrier oil, preferably one without a strong scent that will alter or overwhelm your essential oils. All of these recipes are based in ¼ cup of carrier oil, and are made to be used right away – the fresher the better - so try out a homemade massage oil recipe!

    • Stressbuster: 5 drops orange essential oil + 5 drops frankincense essential oil + 3 drops lavender essential oil + 1 drop each of vetiver and Ylang Ylang.
    • Cold Killer: 5 drops each of eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, and tea tree essential oils.
    • Aches and Pains: 7 drops lavender essential oil + 4 drops helichrysum essential oil + 1 drop each of sandalwood, ginger, and German chamomile essential oils. Skip the chamomile if you are allergic to ragweed.
    • Chill Chaser: 10 drops orange essential oil + 4 drops each of cardamom, cinnamon, and clove.
    • Sleepy Time: 10 drops lavender essential oil + 5 drops valerian essential oil + 3 drops each of mandarin and sandalwood essential oils and rose absolute.
    • PMS: 4 drops each rosemary, bergamot, rose, and clary sage essential oils.
    • Skin Tamer: 10 drops lavender essential oil + 3 drops each of geranium, lemon, and tea tree essential oils.


    Some Cautions

    Since aromatherapy became so popular there are a number of oils out there that are not essential oils. “Fragrance oils” or “perfume oils” are made from synthetic ingredients like petrochemicals or coal tar and have none of the therapeutic elements in essential oils. Keep in mind that you should use caution with essential oils. Make sure that you purchase your ingredients from a reputable dealer. Just because they are natural does not mean that you can’t be allergic to some of them, so always do a test before you use the oil. People taking prescription drugs such as anticoagulants and steroids should talk with their doctor, while pregnant and nursing women should avoid certain oils. With some common sense, and some homework, you’ll soon be making your own massage oils and body care products with ease.
